Vigil in Support of the Asian American & Pacific Islander Community - This Sunday at 2 PM

AAPI Montgomery County has organized a vigil to be held at the Montgomery County Courthouse this Sunday, April 11, 2021 at 2 PM. The event will feature a number of speakers, including State Senator Maria Collett, State Representatives Joanna E. McClinton and Todd Stephens, Montgomery County Commissioner Dr. Valerie Arkoosh, Hiro Nishikawa (Organization of Chinese Americans; Asian Pacific American Advocates; Japanese American Citizens League), Stephanie Sun (PA Governor's Advisory Commission on Asian Pacific American Affairs), and other community leaders and residents.

Law Day - April 30, 2021

Each year, our local legal community gathers together to observe Law Day, a national day set aside to celebrate the rule of law. Please join us on Friday, April 30, 2021 at 11:30 AM - 12:30 PM for a special virtual celebration presided over by President Judge Thomas M. DelRicci. This year's festivities will feature a Naturalization Ceremony, along with the swearing-in of new bar admittees and the presentation of our Law Day Awards.

Mindfulness Monday (Meditation)

Meditation isn't just about relieving stress. It's been known to improve focus, productivity, empathy and listening - all skills we can all stand to improve upon, whether it be as lawyers, partners, parents or people. Join us as we welcome your personal wellness guide, Tracey di Paolo. Tracey is a certified reiki master, a meditation leader, and an RYT 500 yoga instructor, and has been practicing these techniques faithfully now for 20 years.  She's been teaching and inspiring groups and individuals of all ages and skill levels professionally for a little more than five years. Mindfulness Monday meditation sessions will be held on the first Monday of the month from 8:30 AM - 9:00 AM

Wellness Wednesday (Yoga)

Take some reprieve from your everyday stress to align your mind and body with our Wellness Wednesday virtual yoga session. Join professional instructor Desarae Chanel, owner of D.Chanel Yoga in Norristown. Desarae earned her 200hr Vinyassa certification at Dana Hot Yoga under the rich training of Dr. Lisa Mitchell in February of 2018. Quitting her full-time job in September of 2018 to pursue her career as a full-time entrepreneur, she applied tor yoga teacher training to simply deepen her personal practice and learn more about the studies of yoga. Wellness Wednesday virtual yoga sessions will be held on the second Wednesday of the month from 8:30 AM - 9:30 AM.

Young Lawyers Section Seeks Volunteers for May Month of Service

Meals on Wheels

MBA YLS and the Pro Bono and Community Outreach Committee partnered with MontCo SAAC to cover a Meals on Wheels route in Montgomery County. For those of you that have volunteered in the past, you know that this is a great opportunity to give back to the community. Due to the pandemic, there are no longer deliveries on Fridays. Our new route/day is the last Monday of the month. We are currently looking for volunteers for the following dates:

4/26;
5/24 (Note: May is not the last Monday due to Memorial day);
6/28;
7/26;
8/30;
9/27;
10/25;
11/29; and
12/27

Pickup for the meals is around 9:30 am at the MontCo SAAC in Norristown and the route takes 2ish hours. You can volunteer by yourself or with friends. (The route can be done solo, but its more fun with a group). If anyone is interested or has additional questions, please email Robert Sebia, Esq. at rms@elliottgreenleaf.com.

Cecil and Grace Bean Soup Kitchen

The Young Lawyers Section will also volunteer on Saturday, May 15, 2021 at the Cecil and Grace Bean Soup Kitchen in Norristown.  The address is 521 Church Street Norristown, PA 19403.  Volunteers are needed to staff the soup kitchen from 7:00 AM - 10:00 AM.  Volunteers prepare and serve meals to all those who come to the soup kitchen during hours of operation.

The three most recent appointees to the Third Circuit bench will visit with us for a one hour program. Each will speak to the effective advocacy at the Court of Appeals, pointers for briefing, use of Zoom for oral arguments and the like. Time will be allotted for questions.

Appearance Bias and Discrimination: Exploring the Nexus Between Workplace Equity, Diversity, and Inclusivity
Featuring Professor D. Wendy Greene, J.D., LL.M. and Kesha James, Esq. Deputy Director for Advocacy & Pro Bono Director, Legal Aid of Southeastern Pennsylvania

The American Bar Association recently adopted a resolution endorsing anti-bias training on appearance and grooming codes discrimination. In that vein, this CLE will address the nexus between workplace equity, diversity, and inclusivity and appearance bias and discrimination. Race-based natural hair bias and discrimination African descendants encounter in the workplace is the anchor of the discussion; therefore, attendees also learn about recent developments such as the Creating a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair (C.R.O.W.N.) Act as well as other legal reforms aimed to combat race-based natural hair discrimination in workplaces.

When Diversity Came to the MBA: Personal Reflections about the Pioneers

The first four lawyers of color at the Montgomery Bar, Herbert C. Nelson, Esquire, The Honorable Horace A. Davenport, Richard W. Rogers, Esquire and Charles Wharton Smith, Esquire, have passed on but their accomplishments should be remembered and memorialized. Francis Recchuiti, Esquire, a close friend of all four men will present his first-hand recollections and the background history as to how they came to be members of our bar. Some of these accounts are little known. In addition, The Honorable William T. Nicholas will add his personal recollections and anecdotes about all four men.

There are currently two vacancies on Pennsylvania Supreme Court Boards and Committees and they have been posted on the UJS website.

There is one vacancy on the Appellate Court Procedural Rules Committee. Applicants should be knowledgeable about the Pennsylvania Rules of Appellate Procedure and experienced in state appellate practice in Pennsylvania.

There is one vacancy on the Civil Procedural Rules Committee. Applicants should be knowledgeable about the Pennsylvania Rule of Civil Procedure and experienced in state civil practice Pennsylvania.
Applications are due by April 30. 

We are asking your assistance by letting your constituencies know about this vacancy status. As always, we will continue to update monthly on any future openings.
